The All Newton Music School enriches the lives of all generations through the teaching and performance of music. Our mission is Music for All, offering students of all disciplines, backgrounds and ages instruction in classical and contemporary instruments, techniques and styles of music.
Having recently celebrated our centennial, ANMS is poised to transform our building into a 21st century teaching facility that fosters superior educational, programming and performance opportunities.
About the Renovation Project
This is an exciting time to be part of All Newton Music School. We are celebrating 100 years of upholding our mission,"Music for All ". The students, families, board, corporators, board emeritus and dedicated faculty join together making this the special place it is today.
Our 115 year old building is in much need of updating and repairs. This page will explain our Building Renovation Project and direct you to the many ways you can contribute, "playing your part" in our next 100 years of bringing music to Newton and Surrounding communities.
I encourage you to make yourself familiar with this project. ANMS has studied our building needs in great detail. We will schedule renovations only when we have raised the funds for each project. I hope that you will feel compelled to help us revitalize our beautiful building. Thank you for being a member of the All Newton Music School family.
-Paulette Bowes, ANMS Director
Why Now?
Our current facility, purchased in 1965, originally served 300 students. Today, more than 1,400 students compete for limited space. Despite increasing demand, physical limitations of our existing facilities continually hamper programming and innovation - the lifeblood of music education. Our traffic master plan must be redesigned for the safety of our constituents. Aging mechanical systems that have served our school for 53 years are nearing the end of their useful life. Classroom space needs reconfiguration, soundproofing and improved ventilation to allow for increased programming and more effective studio use.

Q: When will the project be completed?
A: The third phase of the renovation project will take 12 months to complete, however the start date is directly dependent on contributions from the ANMS community. The more you donate, the faster we can begin renovations!
Q: How much has ANMS raised towards the $1.8 million goal?
A: Due to the generous donations from the board, ANMS families, alumni, corporations, and other friends, we have raised $1,100,000 towards our ultimate $1.8 million goal.
Q: Are there naming opportunities?
A: There are naming opportunities for this campaign. These can be reviewed by contacting ANMS' Director of Development, The Director, or the President of the Board.
Q: Will this project increase parking at ANMS?
A: There will be some minimal increase in parking at the All Newton Music School campus. However, the main design of this plan is better traffic flow and increased safety of our students. The new traffic flow design includes a long drop-off and pick-up queue, a new sidewalk, two handicap accessible spaces adjacent to the building, and code-compliant entry and exit.
Q: Is this a ‘Green’ project?
A: While this project is not LEED certified, certain upgrades will make our building more energy efficient including window replacement, entrance enhancements, proper insulation, efficient lighting, and more efficient mechanical systems.
Q: Who is managing the construction efforts?
A: All Newton Music School has selected Auburndale Builders to be the contractor for the renovation project. Auburndale Builders has extensive expertise in renovation projects of this scope and has a long history of excellent work in the City of Newton.
Q: How will gifts to the Building Renovation Project be used?
A: Gifts to the Building Renovation Project will be used specifically as temporarily restricted gifts to the completion of the master facility plan. Gifts will not be used for general operating or endowment funds.
Q: Is this campaign eligible for matching gifts from my company?
A: Most companies do offer matching gifts as a benefit to their employees. The process is simple. The employee should obtain matching gift forms from their Human Resource department, then send the form to All Newton Music School along with their donation. ANMS will take care of the rest. Please check with your HR department to see if your company allows matching gifts for capital projects.
Q: Will the architectural integrity of the building be jeopardized?
A: No. The Board has done extensive studies in order to devise the best plan to maintain the architectural integrity of the building with the most efficient use of our funds.
Q: Can you explain how this project is compliant with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) regulations?
A: After meeting with the Boston Access Board, ANMS has been granted a variance to make our first and second floor 100% accessible. This includes renovated restrooms, a new handicap accessible ramp, a new lift to the second floor, a wheelchair rescue ramp, accessible doorways and programming priority in our daily teaching schedules. Through this renovation project, we are extremely excited to become more accessible for our entire ANMS community.
Q: Are you planning a permanent installation of bricks and benches that supports the Renovation Project?
A: Yes! By buying a brick in the ANMS Birck Legacy Program, you will be supporting the ANMS Building Renovation Project. For a gift of $150, a 4"x8" brick will be engraved according to your specifications and placed on the ANMS campus at the completion of the Building Renovation Project. Additionally, limited engraved benches are also available. These 300-pound stone benches will be placed throughout the ANMS campus at the completion of the Building Renovation Project.
